Students in Danny Kurkiewicz’s College in the Schools (CIS) Human Physiology, Technology, and Medical Devices class recently had the exceptional opportunity to tour the Visible Heart Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Institute for Engineering in Medicine.
During the tour, students learned about the history of heart surgery and heart medical technologies and toured a working research lab that is a collaboration between the U of M and Medtronic, a partnership that dates back to the invention of the first pacemaker.
Mahtomedi High School offers eight CIS concurrent enrollment course options. These free classes are taught in our school and offered through the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State University. Our high school teachers teach these classes and undergo a training and approval process. Successful completion results in both high school and college credits for students.
Here’s what some of our MHS Class of 2025 students have shared about the CIS Human Physiology class:
“One of my favorite classes at MHS was CIS Human Physiology because it solidified my desire to pursue a medical career. The ability to take AP, CIS, and PSEO courses while at MHS provided me with the rigorous learning opportunity I needed to succeed.” -Abigail Wiebe
“CIS Human Physiology was a class that taught me how to learn in a way I haven't before. It forced me to develop my own forms of studying which I believe has helped me become an overall better student. The class taught important memorization and application skills, along with how to work as a team through dissections and activities.” -Ned Whitney
"CIS Human Physiology, Technology, and Medical Devices; This class really taught me how to study and it really made me more interested in the medical path. I've always known I'd want to go into medicine but this class really solidified that by making me love it. I can say with confidence it's the hardest class I've ever taken but I wish I had the opportunity to take it again knowing what I know now regarding to how to prepare. I think this class has really helped me be ready for college classes.” -Kaili Malvey
